Delmas

About Delmas

Steve Robertson was instrumental in establishing The Rocks District as a distinct American Viticultural Area (AVA). Nestled in Oregon, adjacent to Walla Walla, Washington, this region is celebrated for its unique geological past and distinctive soil composition. The area's rocky terrain is pivotal in cultivating some of the United States' most intriguing and unique wines.

Recognizing the potential of this terroir, Steve acquired a 13-acre plot within what is now the Rocks District; the only AVA in the USA whose boundaries are defined by a singular soils series. Cascading down from the nearby Blue Mountains, the wild Walla Walla River deposited layer upon layer of volcanic soils over thousands of years, creating this globally distinctive appellation. This land, known as SJR Vineyard, became the cornerstone of the Robertson family's wine-making endeavors.

As the quality of the grapes from SJR Vineyard reached excellence, the family launched Delmas, an estate winery. All of Delmas' wines originate from the SJR Vineyard, which is uniquely situated at the southwest corner of this alluvial fan, abutting the VanSycle Ridge; where the ancient wild river flowed-ended, and finer soils were deposited amongst the cobbles/gravels. Brooke Delmas Robertson, who has taken the helm in guiding the winegrowing and winemaking efforts for the family, ensures the continuation of their distinguished wines.

Why We Love Delmas

SJR Vineyard provides a singularly distinctive expression within The Rocks District. The terroir’s finer, volcanic, river soils and its location, provides for heightened aromatics, layers of savory complexity notes, and textural length. Delmas makes our favorite wines from The Rocks District.
