The 2023 Award - Best $100 Champagne

Champagne, with its effervescent charm, has always captivated me. Wanting to really learn which champagne was best, I set out on a quest to unearth the best champagne available for $100 or less.

This exploration began at the heart of my community—local supermarkets, dedicated wine shops, and sophisticated wine bars. Engaging in a rigorous tasting process involving over 35 bottles, each selection was meticulously examined. The joy of this exploration was not only mine to relish; my friends enthusiastically joined in, appreciating every sip.

To ensure an unbiased and extensive comparison, my journey took me to prominent cities like Los Angeles, New York, and the Bay Area. However, to truly cement my verdict, a pilgrimage to the famed Champagne region was imperative. Immersing myself, I tasted a staggering range of over 100 champagnes. Among this vast selection, one distinct bottle repeatedly captured my palate: the 2016 Champagne Augustin Feu.

This outstanding champagne exhibits a nuanced character, born from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from 70-year-old vines. Its roots delve deep into a mixture of limestone and clay. Maintaining a commitment to environmental harmony, its cultivation is both biodynamic and organic. A unique fermentation process, relying on the previous year's lees, is employed, and Feu remains on its lees for close to a year before being expertly disgorged in 2022, without any dosage addition. Its aromatic profile is a symphony of fresh bread, brioche, zesty orange, and red apple, harmoniously blending with its creamy palate. A lingering finish simply accentuates its allure.

Yet, a challenge arose. This exceptional 2016 Champagne Augustin Feu was not accessible in the US. Driven to bridge this gap, I collaborated with the warm-hearted Augustin family, established an import company, and ensured this champagne found its rightful place in the States.

Now, for the very first time, the opportunity to indulge in the finest $100 champagne, the 2016 Champagne Augustin Feu is possible. If you're keen to embark on this tasting journey, reach out to your local wine dealer or distributor to connect with us. Your glass awaits.
